London - The British public regards former president Nelson Mandela as the biggest humanitarian hero of the last 60 years.
Of about 2 000 people questioned in a British Red Cross opinion poll, 28% said they regarded Mandela as the biggest humanitarian hero.
Princess Diana garnered 23% of the votes and rock star/philanthropist Bob Geldoff 11%.
They were followed by Mahatma Ghandi (9%), Mother Teresa (7%), UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the British Prime Minister Tony Blair (3% each), and former British prime minister Winston Churchill with 2%.
With the celebration of the first decade of democracy in South Africa last week, London mayor Ken Livingstone promised to use his influence to convince the city council of Westminster to erect a statue of Mandela on Trafalgar Square.
