Johannesburg - A 36-year-old man was arrested after police found perlemoen - worth about R138 000 on the street - in his car near Middelburg on Friday, Eastern Cape police said.
Captain Erris Claasen said police were conducting routine patrols on the road between Middelburg and Steynsburg when they became suspicious about a BMW.
They stopped and searched the car, and found 28 bags of perlemoen (abalone) inside it.
The driver, apparently on his way to Gauteng, was arrested.
He would appear in the Middelburg magistrate's court later on Friday for illegal possession of perlemoen, said Claasen.
