Boesak speaks for gays

Cape Town - Dr Allan Boesak, assessor of the United Reformed Church, will lead the discussions in the URC on the issue of homosexuality.

Boesak confirmed on Friday that he had been appointed to compile a task team in collaboration with the theologian, Dr Nico Smit, which will deal with the issue in the next two years as "a matter of priority".

Boesak is regarded as being accommodating towards gays and has already indicated in the past that he was in favour of gay marriages.

According to Boesak they want members of the URC synod to serve on the committee, and also professional advisers such as psychologists.

They also want to arrange with a parent of a gay child, as well as two gays (a man and a woman) to sit on the task team.

"To us it is important to talk about gay people but they have to be involved in the discussions.

"It is also important that gay people who join in the discussions should be members of our church."

It is expected that the official discussions will start within the next two months.

Similar discussions are at present being held in the Dutch Reformed Church, the Anglican Church and the Methodist Church. ENDS
