Durban - eThekwini metro police said on Wednesday that more than 23 000 motorists were trapped for speeding in Durban during September.
Spokesperson John Tyala said that during the 30 days of September, 23 402 motorists were caught speeding and would either have to pay admission of guilt fines or appear in court.
More than 3 000 people were ticketed for speeding in three locations alone - Umgeni Road, Higginson Highway in Chatsworth and Arthur Hopewell Drive near Westville.
Other high profile roads where large numbers of people were caught speeding were Northway near the Athlone Bridge and NMR Avenue in central Durban.
Tyala said: "The main aim of enforcement is to deter speeding rather than catch drivers."
The chances of being killed at 120km was four times greater than when a motorist was travelling at 100km.
Tyala warned that eThekwini metro police would be stepping up efforts to reign in speedsters.
"Speed cameras will be at more locations more of the time and locations where speed cameras operate will change regularly and will be almost impossible to pick."
