Johannesburg - Roads around Alexandra township in northern Johannesburg were closed on Tuesday morning after a group of gunmen robbed a cash-in-transit van of an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.
Sergeant Sanku Tsunke said Marlboro and London roads were closed after a group of gunmen in a white BMW chased a minibus-type security van belonging to Ram security and crashed into it about 09:00.
An estimated 12 gangsters then arrived and cut open the roof of the van taking several money boxes before driving away.
Tsunke said one of the getaway cars was a Mercedes Benz. Unconfirmed reports said a woman had been hijacked to provide the gunmen with another getaway vehicle.
Two guards inside the minibus were injured in the attack and taken to Sunninghill hospital for treatment.
No shots were fired during the robbery and no arrests had yet been made but police were mounting a manhunt for the robbers, Tsunke said.
