Johannesburg - The severed hand of a passenger involved in an accident on the N3 highway near the Buccleugh interchange was found in the emergency lane on Friday afternoon, Johannesburg emergency management services said.
Spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said the driver of a four wheel drive collided with two other vehicles.
"The Subaru collided with two cars and hit the barrier. A section of the barrier crashed into the Subaru, and a female passenger's hand was amputated."
Midgley said the highway was closed for a short period until the woman's limb was found in the emergency lane on the opposite side about 500m away.
The driver of the Subaru and the other motorists suffered minor injuries.
