Dog handler was twice named top cop

Johannesburg - One of the dog handlers of the North East Rand Dog Unit, who was
arrested last week on charges of attempted murder, was twice named
as the top cop in his unit, the Sunday Times reported on Sunday.
Inspector Christo Koch, 32, and five colleagues were arrested after
the controversial screening of video footage on SABC television
showing the dog handlers using illegal immigrants as "live bait"
for their dogs.
Police confirmed that Koch twice received the award because of his
record of the most arrests and successful prosecutions as well as
for exemplary professional behaviour.
Safety and Security Minister, Steve Tshwete said on Saturday that
Koch's awards showed that a policeman's value was not determined by
the awards he received.
He said there would be no place for racists in the police service
in future. Tshwete said once a racist was detected, he would have
no other option but to go.
He also said dogs would no longer be used in crowd control and that
potential dog handlers would have to undergo psychological tests. -
