Cops warn on fireworks

Johannesburg - The public should remember that fireworks must be used within the law, said Gauteng police in a statement.
"Members of the public must note the fact that the mere possession of fireworks is not an offence, but when that possession is in contravention with the regulations, such fireworks can be confiscated," said spokesperson Phuti Setati.
Police will be working with local fire prevention offices to make sure they are up to date on the current regulations.
Regulations
The use of fireworks in certain areas is restricted. Fireworks may not be used within 500 metres of gas meters, petrol stations or other flammable places.
They also may not be used in any building or public place, except without the permission of a local authority. That permission is also required for fireworks that cause a noise nuisance.
Fireworks may only be purchased from a licensed dealer and not from any informal vendors.
The punishment for breaking these rules could include a fine of R600 and up to one year of jail time.
The fireworks, for their part, could be confiscated and destroyed, Setati said.
