Storm approaching stranded ship

East London - Maritime authorities were pumping water into the tanks of a beached bulk carrier off the coast of East London on Tuesday afternoon to hold her steady during an approaching storm.
SA maritime safety authority (Samsa) spokesperson Peter Kroon said an attempt would be made to refloat the 14 921-ton Kiperousa once the storm, expected arrive on Tuesday night, had passed.
"They are stabilising the ship's position at moment by pumping water into ballast tanks so that she doesn't move," Kroon said.
"They will attempt to refloat her once storm has passed."
Attempts to refloat the Kiperousa were unsuccessful on Monday.
On Friday a tow cable that was attached to a tug broke during an attempt to tow the ship out to sea.
A helicopter capable of eight tons was flown in with wires and chains to make a stronger connection.
An internationally recognised specialist salvage master was also flown in to assist with the operation.
Last week Samsa said it had given permission for the salvage operation to go ahead without the oil being removed from the Kiperousa, because this would be very difficult and time-consuming.
