Johannesburg - Johannesburg police will be out in Hillbrow in large numbers and are taking a "zero tolerance approach" this New Year's Eve.
The SA Police Service and the Johannesburg metro police have agreed to increase their presence and efforts until Thursday, said Gauteng police spokesperson Eugene Opperman.
"We have adopted a zero tolerance approach towards all crime, road traffic offences and the illegal sale of liquor and fireworks," said Opperman.
He declined to give a specific number of police to be deployed on New Year's but he said that it would be much more than usual. Administrative staff police, who usually only work office hours, will be on the streets for New Year's Eve.
Police will also be putting up more road blocks and conducting more searches in Hillbrow, as well as in the greater Johannesburg area. Police have also met with municipal officials and building owners to plan safety issues for New Year's Eve.
"It must be clearly understood that the SAPS has no intention of spoiling the fun of law-abiding revellers and partygoers who act responsibly," said Opperman. But he warned that lawbreakers, including those driving while drunk, would be arrested.
"They can enjoy themselves within the law," said Opperman.
