Im glad that you (unlike the media) have addressed this issue as a barbaric INITIATION, like most initiations it?s barbaric or at least very degrading towards the person(s) being initiated. That this has been touted as racists I don?t understand (typical racial slurs from certain parties) since this kind of degrading initiation has been perturbed by white students on white first year students and black men on black kids (who are about to become men) for years! The root cause of the actions of the students was unhappiness about the policy of forced racial integration of residences. The university authorities who imposed this Orwellian measure must therefore be held co-responsible. The rector should resign, because his racist policies caused the problem.

I fully agree! We are heading for an implosion! I am a white afrikaans male, but what happened at UFS shocked me and is totally unacceptable! I hope they are severely punished for their actions! The one thing I would like to emphasize is that the same justice must apply when the reverse happens... When white people are humiliated, tortured and murderred! When this happens, and it happens daily the silence from the black community is deafening! I ask for consistency!!!

I agree with you 100%. These students are not worthy of being called or treated as human beings. Any behavoir like this should be treated immediately by naming and shaming these guys. The should be forced to work for those cleaners to pay back the humiliation they have made them suffer. Imagine the company to give these "future leaders" a job one day. I know there will be those who will blame this act on integration. They will claim that UFS should have been left white and Afrikaans. These kids were taught that Blacks are no humans, they could be treated worse than animals and it's okay. Notice one thing, no white party or forum will condemn this, they will wait for the ANC to comment and then attack the ANC, just like in Skielek. Still wondering why the ANC will rule this country for the next 100yrs?

I just wanted to point your attention to the fact that Helen Zille (a white leader of a multi racial party) was one of the first to condemn this. These guys deserve all they're gonna get and more. Though I do find it strange that when white boys steps out of line, the SABC has a field day, but when it's black boys the word apartheid and poverty get cited and the story killed. We should all be ashamed this day that we've allowed our society to deteriorate to the moral low it is today.

This is shocking!!! These people must be brought to book and in fact, an example should be made by giving them the highest sentence possible. We were all initiated in various situations during our upbringing (School hostels, National service,University hostels etc.)but it was never barbaric. This incident is a barbaric act and it was clearly aimed at humiliating the victims who will now, and in future, hate the perpetrators, and for that matter, all white people for ever.

You only mention the UFS incident in the second paragraph of your article and the rest of your article you write about stuff that does not directly link to the barbaric actions of the UFS students. What makes me sad, is that will now be turned into a racial issue, even though those of us who went to Varsity know that this happens every year to the new guys and it has been happening since the first hostel was there.Don't expel them though, force them to go and live in one of the traditionally black hostels, maybe there they will get the same treatment!

If my memory serves me correctly - this isn't the first time that Reitz Hostel has been implicated in a scandel. During the 90's the Hostel was closed for a few years- it seems that this hostel is a place where the racist white students gather.

We whites were up in arms about the Forum for Black Jouralists, etc. Now white people go and do that. This does not help the cause at all and just puts us back in the old SA. The students who made the video should be criminally charged and be put in jail with black criminals in order to sort them out in an appropriate way (make them drink there own piss). I just truly hope that all whites are now not measured on the actions of the sick few who did this.

All I want to know is, when will these initiations finally be stopped (they have been here for YEARS)? Never mind who the guilty party is, we as a society should address all types of initiation within our country (all communities) and either ban them altogether or convert them into something fruitful where the initiated are proud to join a certain group and to be part of that group.

I am a parent of two small children. How do these children's parent feel or are they still racists from the old SA? Excellent article. The behaviour in the video is unacceptable under any conditions / circumstances. Blaming policies (Anton) for this behaviour is ludicrous. There are other options to voice displeasure at policies. As for the students involved, animals have better morals / ideals and more respect than they do. A half developed amoeba would fit better into society than this lot do and should be allowed to.

Segregation isn't such a bad thing. It shouldn't be enforced but if people don't want to mix with other cultures they should have the right not to. Young people don't realise they need to contribute to society by paying taxes and integrating into society. UOVS can never be properly transformed, this is been going on for years. The families of those poor staff members must institute legal action against the institution.The rector also lacks sound management and leadership, he suspends the men instead of expulsion. Reitz has a long history of abuse and assualt (in my days 1990's it was white on white)and if I remember correctly they were even closed a few years because of their behaviour. I have not seen the video - am out of touch. But if these idiots actually filmed their stupid bullying, then how did they actually get into university?? It certainly seems like an extremely dumb thing to have done. I hope they get kicked out of and banned from all other universities. They are an embarrassment to the rest of us proudly white people.

That University should have been transformed in 1994. However, this is 2008 and there are riots on campus due to "white" and "black" residences. Every Afrikaans University still has a barbaric process of inititiation rituals. It is done quietly, but with the silent approval of the University leadership. This barbarism is the direct, and logical result. No, Prof Frederick Fourie must get on his bicycle and be replaced by someoene that CAN implement transformation.

Why are whites so afraid of calling racism with its name? Is it so embarassing to admit that there are still large elements of racists in our society, including some regular contributors on this site? On the subject matter, I am an alumni of the said University. Many whites regard it as the last laager of the Afrikaners. They have done all tricks in the book to ensure preservartion of white supremacy in the institution and Stellenbosch and Poch will follow.

I still can't belive that in this day and age UFS students are divided by the colour of their skin, in their residences, I wonder if they are divided in the classrooms as well. The group areas act came to an end and now it's still enforced in universities

I also went to KOVSIES and stayed in a dorm. Let me tell you that Reitz had this coming. A long time ago they even closed that Dorm down for a couple of years. You see their culture is a bullish army style type of dorm. The only thing they can do is play rugby and recently they are even struggling to do that. Close that drom down ASAP and save yourselves a lot of future trouble as well.

By the way, what Dikeledi is saying is true. What you have seen on the video is nothing compared to what actually used to happen at that University around 1995 - 1997. Whites in general hate blacks and are not even prepared to move an inch on reconcilliation. They urinate at every effort for integration and reconciliation

You have to agree with people like H. Verwoerd, Anton and the likes, if you don't want to mix with someone you shouldn't have to and to excersise that right you have to aquire private property. The university residences are public domain so your personal preferences are limited. If those guys din't want to integrate and mix with other races they should have found accomodation off campus.

The actions of those white students at Reitz is disgusting and unacceptable. They must be held accountable and face the consequences of their actions. Having said this, as a mother I can see where frustrations arise that results in gross acts against fellow human beings. The level of violence at schools, the shooting, stabbings and deaths of youngsters, is having a profound affect on the youth. Unfortunately the Govt and the parents are not leading by example but by colour as did the past govt. h
