Johannesburg - A Mozambican man was shot in the head, at point blank range, and killed on Friday morning as he made his way to work, Gauteng police said.
Inspector Kay Makhubele said the 22-year-old was en route to work in Mfulo North at around 06:20 when he was approached by group of men and shot in the head.
He died at the scene.
Police do not believe the motive for the attack was robbery as the man's cellphone, wallet and other belongings were found on his person.
Asked whether the shooting was related to a recent outbreak of xenophobic violence in Gauteng, Makhubele said the motive was unknown.
"At the moment we cannot say that because there is nothing to warrant us saying something like that... our investigation will lead us as to why," he said.
A case of murder was under investigation.
