Kimberly - A 36-year-old woman was killed when the vehicle she was travelling in collided with a passenger train at Hartswater near Kimberley on Saturday, Northern Cape police said.
Inspector Tony Modise said the accident occurred when the driver of the vehicle attempted to cross a railway track ahead of an oncoming train.
The vehicle apparently switched off in the middle of the railway track.
Modise said four of the vehicle's occupants, including the driver managed to escape from the vehicle before the train collided with it.
The victim was unable to get out of the vehicle in time and died on the scene, Modise said.
Her identity could not be released until her next-of-kin were informed.
