Pretoria - A tuckshop owner was murdered and his wife raped during an attack by three men on their smallholding east of Pretoria, police said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Inspector Anton Breedt said the couple, both 26, were woken at midnight by banging on the door of their shop/home on a smallholding east of Pretoria.
"When they answered, three men, two armed with handguns, barged inside and fired three shots, killing the man instantly," he said.
The woman was taken to nearby bushes and allegedly raped by all three attackers.
"She managed to escape when a police patrol passed the area and spotted the car that the men had used parked nearby. She ran out of the bushes towards them and her attackers fled," Breed said.
The woman was taken to a clinic for medical attention.
Breedt said the men, who are still on the run, had also stolen a TV and hi-fi during the attack.
