Johannesburg - Three criminals were critically injured in a police car chase in the Moot area, in Pretoria, after a member of the public alerted police to their suspicious behaviour, police said on Tuesday.
The three, believed to be "smash and grab" criminals, were injured when the car they used to flee from police, collided with a truck transporting gas, spokesperson Inspector Paul Ramaloko said.
"The driver of the car - a Nissan Sentra - failed to stop at a red robot and drove in front of the gas truck."
All three were rushed to hospital under police guard.
The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident.
Ramaloko said several items, believed to be stolen, were recovered from the car.
"A charge of reckless and negligent driving and possession of suspected stolen items has been opened against the suspects," he said.
