Pretoria - Three armed men who robbed a security truck here on Monday morning dumped their loot and fled empty-handed in the heat of a police chase.
Inspector Anton Breedt said the three opened fire on a Fidelity Guards employee about 09:30, shortly after he had collected cash from a chicken take-away in Sunnyside.
They managed to get hold of the money box the guard was carrying, and fled the scene in a bakkie.
The guard was injured during the robbery when the attackers slammed his arm in the door of the security vehicle, said Breedt.
A policeman saw what happened and chased the robbers.
A few blocks away, the robbers changed their bakkie for a red Volkswagen Jetta and continued their flight.
The Jetta was found later, abandoned in the parking area of the University of South Africa with the unopened money box still inside.
Police also found an R-5 automatic rifle in the car.
