Bloemfontein - A man who lives on a farm near Theunissen in the Free State was arrested for growing a dagga plantation near his house, police said on Friday.
Police spokesperson Puleng Motsoeneng said two policemen were following up information at about 04:00 on Thursday.
"They went to Houaan Farm in the Theunissen district where they saw a man who tried to run away when he saw the police vehicle," Motsoeneng said.
The policemen found the man carrying a bag of dagga. Another bag of dagga was found at the man's house.
"They (police) searched around the yard and found 1 000 trees of dagga to an estimated value of R55 000."
Motsoeneng said the man, 52, was arrested after the owner of the farm confirmed that he was an old resident on his farm.
The farm owner was not aware of the dagga plantation.
The suspect will appear before Theunissen Magistrate's Court on Monday, 24 January.
