Cops swoop on boozers

Johannesburg - One hundred and forty-three people were arrested over the weekend during a crime prevention operation, Northern Cape police said on Sunday.
"Eighty-three people were arrested for alcohol-related offences; most of the people were pedestrians who were drunk in public, others were drinking alcohol in public, driving under the influence of alcohol and operating illegal shebeens" said police spokesperson Captain Tony Modise in a statement.
Forty-three other arrests were for crimes ranging from assault, house-breaking, theft, malicious damage to property, domestic violence, dagga, possessing stolen goods as well as stealing out of cars and the arrest of wanted suspects.
"Twenty drivers were arrested for traffic related offences " said Modise.
The police confiscated 47 dangerous weapons, as well as dagga worth R22 000 and stolen goods worth R13 000.
The Northern Cape police said that they would intensify their crime prevention campaign and show no-mercy to anyone found breaking the law.
The zero tolerance campaign would run from Christmas eve until January 2.
