No justice for puppy?

Dear Editor,

I have, with utter disgust, read of the sentence handed down to Phillip Matthysen who decapitated his young Husky with a chainsaw.

"R10 000 fine or 12 months' imprisonment, suspended for five years."

Oh yes, and he has to pay the SPCA R5 000. This man is not going to suffer huge hardship, is he?

It is my opinion (and many others) that if one is cruel to animals, one is often capable of cruelty to humans. The fine should not have been suspended. Secondly, he should have been made to work every weekend at the SPCA for a year. Cleaning up animal faeces might bring home the lesson of responsibility to animals.

Last, but not least, he is allowed to keep his other dogs. Need I say more?

While it is true that this person has issues, the fact remains that there are far worse crimes being committed in this country. The rape of babies for example. Perhaps focus should be more on protecting our young and the future generations from a sick society before worrying about some dog.... Just a thought.

This ruling is simply another slap in the face for animal rights & rights in general in the country.If this thug can afford to travel to London on business than surely R10 000 is pocket change for him? Perhaps a 2nd psychiatric opinion is needed? How can anyone who commits such an act be declared sane? He reminds nme of the freak who stuck a firecracker into his dog's rectum a few years ago,a garden variety sadist,nothing less.

This man is a horrid excuse for a person. Had he decapitated a person he would have been locked up for life. I know there is a difference between a human and a dog, but the dog was still a living, breathing thing. He should be punished FAR FAR more than this. Him and his worker who assisted are disgusting. His picture should be put up everywhere so that when we see this man, we remember who he is and know not to give him any respect.

Yes i fully agree that his sentence is quite lean. But please people, compare it to other crimes. Babies raped, murdered. Hijackings galore, family murders and armed robbery is everyday stories. These sentences are also very light. It probably boils down to our prisons being full so they have no place for these criminals. They should build more prisons and then we would most likely see criminals behind bars again.

In my book it means he can actually still go on Oh, and by the way: I don't think the fine will hurt him, if he could afford expensive parrots (or whatever kind of bird it was) I'm sure that a total of R15 000 won't hurt his pocket. Anyone capable of commiting such a heinous crime should be immediately locked up and the key shuold be thrown away. Matthysen is pure evil and the same goes for his scummy gardener who held the poor dog down. And Drew, someone this evil will undoubtedly move on to harming humans given his sick nature. I don't think it is valid to argue about "worse" crimes. The message is clear - one can get away with cruelty. It's hardly a stretch of the imagination that perpetrators of cruel acts against animals are more likely to commit acts of violence against people as well. To the best of my knowledge this has been researched, and indeed found to be the case. We either tolerate cruelty or we don't. In this case, cruelty has been tolerated. Sad.

I think what the he done to the dog is hars and cruel but its just a dog, why don't they spend their time looking for people who kill endangered animals im pretty sure my kid will know what a dog is one day. I am not defending what he done i think it is wrong but come on lets spend our time worrying about people who kill endangered animals and make a big scene like you did with the puppy. i know of a girl that got raped the other day that didn't even make the news but a puppy getting killed is?

This behaviour was just sickening and should be punished accordingly. I cant believe they also letting him keep his other dog. He should be banned from owning any pets. Aswell as serving jail time. How is paying a fine punishment?

There is a special place in hell reserved for people who are cruel to animals. It is absolutely inexcusable that someone who has done something so purely evil isn't punished more severely, and I find it sickening that an educated person in a position of authority doesn't view this in a more serious light. If someone could do this to a harmless, loving and friendly animal, what's to stop them moving on to people. I hope the people involved are torn to shreds by a pack of wolves.

All husky owners should be decapitated for animal cruelty, because a husky is a animal that loves cold and is bred for that purpose and SA's weather is to hot for this kind of breed. He actualy saved the dog from years and years hell in sunny SA.

A life is a life be it dog or human and to take it willfully is murder. The Justice system fails yet again!!!! Do we have to now wonder why crime levels are so high??? You can kill at will (or in the killer's case if your stress levels are high and you are tired) and the most you will get is a suspended sentence. To the killer I hope he is savagely torn apart by some animal somewhere and is left to suffer for a long while.

If he can do this once "in a fit of rage",he will do it again (& yet again he will get off lightly).What frustrates the hell out me is that we have no mass demonstrations in this country against crime etc.(the masses only tend to show themselves when it is time for strike action).1000 protesting against crime is nothing,100000 & the government will start taking notice.

Drew, once we sort out the relatively small crimes, like this psychopath committed, the "far worse crimes" will reduce. You have to sort out the small stuff first, and then go after what is considered the more serious crimes. Take Singapore, for example. Unfortunately the dog-killer is not going to stop at this, and will probably move on to people eventually. It is a common pattern of psychopathic tendencies.

Did you know that in the US people who abuse animals are locked up and watched if they are released therafter. It has been proven that people who abuse animals are just ''practising'' for when they start on children, woman etc... Also, there is no comparison and its not a ''light'' crime as some so ignorantly put it, they are not just dogs or animals they are all beings that deserve a good life and if you choose to have a pet in your life they are your responsibility to care for and protect.

You are clearly missing the bigger picture here as there is more to this than just an animal being killed. A very wise person once said that you can judge a society by the way it treats it's infirm, aged and animals and in this case the logic would dictate that we are a VERY sick society. What has transpired here is indicative of the moral decline of society. We have individuals who state that this is not worthy of a harsh sentence due to it being only a dog and that crimes committed against children and humans take precedence. ALL crimes of this nature should be viewed in a severe and harsh light, regardless of the victim. The punishment should not be passed on whether it was an animal or a human as both should be just as deplorable.

I think the biggest crime is the injustice of the whole situation. "The Chainsaw Killer of Delmas" is a monster. Killing an innocent being is, I think, the worst crime to be committed. A being that trusts you, who think the sun dawns ad sets by you, and now you go and hurt it, be it a baby, a child or a pet. Injustice reigns in South Africa. I agree with CJ - why should we turn a blind eye to animal cruelty because there are worse crimes being commited to humans. The FBI has found that a history of cruelty to animals is one of the traits that regularly appears in its computer records of serial rapists and murderers, and the standard diagnostic and treatment manual for psychiatric and emotional disorders lists cruelty to animals as a diagnostic criterion for conduct disorders.

Who cares, its just a frigging dog. There are millions were that came from. Even if the puppy wasn't categorically replaceable, its not like it contributed anything whatsoever to the world. Four working for water labourers beat to death a recently released porcupine in the Tokai forest. Should they also be tried? This was surely a crueler and less motivated act? I am sure that I have read of credible research which could have been produced in court to show that these types of savages inevitably abuse humans. The point here is not whether a puppy died, or a parrot, or a baby for that matter; and speculating that Matthysen might turn on women and/or children next is conjecture. Don?t lose focus in a futile debate over which is more valuable ? animal versus human life, because all life is precious. The crux of this matter is a moral one. Phillip Matthysen acted immorally and his action should carry a consequence. What sets humans apart is their ability to decide between right and wrong. Obviously that doesn?t apply to him ...

Yes, what he did was gruesome and terrible and cruel. He killed an innocent animal. The uproar about this is out of proportion though as people have become desensitised to the daily violent crimes against PEOPLE in this country. The sentence could have been much harsher, but let's face it: cows that get slaughtered for your yummy steak don't exactly die peaceful deaths either. Remember that before you go off on a crusade claiming to be oh so humane.
