Pretoria - The results of this year's matric exams will be announced on December 28, the education department said on Wednesday.
With just 40 days to go before the final exams start, Education Department deputy director-general Penny Vinjevold urged matric candidates to "knuckle down".
They should be reading at least 50 pages and writing up to 500 words a day in the run-up to the national senior certificate exams.
"Learners should really use every opportunity to prepare, before and during the examination," she said.
Almost 550 000 full-time pupils and 200 000 part-time pupils are expected to write the exams this year.
Vinjevold said 11 of the subject papers this year would be set nationally.
In previous years, only five were nationally-set and the rest set at provincial level.
