Johannesburg - A woman driving a Jetta was killed on Johannesburg's Hendrik Potgieter Drive on Thursday when she did a U-turn in front of a truck, emergency services said.
The car was completely destroyed when she was hit by an oncoming sand-tipper lorry.
Spokesperson Malcolm Midgley said the driver of the sand-tipper was "shaken to pieces" but unhurt.
"He couldn't believe his eyes when the car turned right in front of him," Midgley said.
The accident occurred between Fredenharry Drive and Nic Diederichs Boulevard, near another fatal accident at the Fredenharry Drive intersection in Strubens Valley.
In that accident two women died when a Mazda Drifter crashed into them when the traffic lights were out of order.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency said the lights were out of order due to a power failure in the area.
The traffic lights came back on soon after the accident and the latest accident was not linked to that, Midgley said.
