Johannesburg - An alleged robber was shot and killed during a shoot-out with police in Vosloorus on Saturday morning, Gauteng police said.
Superintendent Thembi Nkhwashu said police were patrolling in Vosloorus on the East Rand when they were stopped by a 32-year-old woman who said three men had tried to rob her.
She led them to the area where the alleged incident took place and police confronted the three men.
Nkhwashu said one of them pointed a firearm at police, who reacted by asking him to surrender the gun. Police fired warning shots when he refused.
The man then shot at police who returned fire, hitting the man in the upper body.
He died on the scene and his accomplices ran away.
Police seized the man's firearm which had its identifying serial numbers filed off.
The other two men were known to police and would be arrested soon, Nkhwashu said.
The man, aged 23, was linked to a number of armed robberies in the area, she said.
Cases of attempted murder and armed robbery were under investigation.
