Johannesburg - KwaZulu-Natal police used rubber bullets to disperse more than 2 000 people who gathered in Greytown's Nhlalakahle township for an unauthorised march on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Henry Budhram said at least 2 500 people were toyi-toying, while some barricaded roads leading into and out of the township.
"They began moving old cars and rocks to barricade the streets. When police removed the barricades, the community replaced them and refused to stop."
Budhram said police were forced to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
The residents had been protesting about poor service delivery and retrenchments by the Greytown municipality.
