Johannesburg - A 77-year-old woman was found dead with her hands tied behind her back in a village near Qwa Qwa, eastern Free State police said on Friday.
Captain Motarafi Ntepe said Amelia Sempe's body was found when her 14-year-old grandson visited her in Thababosiu at 06:30 on Thursday.
The boy found the door was not fully closed and when Sempe did not respond as he knocked he called a relative staying nearby.
"Upon entering the house they found it was ransacked, everything thrown on the floor and beds turned upside-down," Ntepe said.
She said Sempe was found in her bedroom, dead with a cloth tied around her neck.
Although the motive for the attack was not known, relatives told the police the woman, who stayed on her own, had been robbed on "several occasions".
A murder case was being investigated and a post-mortem would be conducted.
Ntepe appealed to anyone with information on the incident to contact Captain S P Kubheka at 082-419-7157.
