Mbombela - Mpumalanga's tourism MEC has said the murder of a well-known couple who owned an award-winning restaurant outside Sabie could spark fears about the safety of hosting the 2010 World Cup in the province.

Department of economic development, environment and tourism MEC Jabu Mahlangu labelled the double murder "shocking and cruel" and lamented that it took place "while the world is watching us".

"Tourism is our goldmine in this province, and such barbaric acts could deter people from visiting us. And here we are one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup,” he said on Friday.

"This could make potential visitors think twice before using our facilities. We cannot accept this to continue. We hope that the police will leave no stone unturned to bring the perpetrators to book," said Mahlangu.

The MEC said everyone had a right to life and that "no one has a licence to take it".

"We condemn the murder in the strongest possible terms and I send our condolences to the family, relatives and friends of the Steyn couple," said Mahlangu.

Leon and Hetta Steyn were shot with an R5 rifle shortly before 07:00 on Thursday morning in their guesthouse at the disused Hendriksdal Railway Station near Sabie. Next to their house was their well-known restaurant, The Artist's Café, which was highly popular among locals as well as foreign visitors.

Sabie police said the motive appeared to be robbery because the house had been somewhat ransacked, but the robbers fled before they could take anything because they were disturbed by neighbours who came to investigate immediately after hearing the shots.

Acting provincial police commissioner Rex Machabi's spokesperson, Captain Leonard Hlathi, said the case had now been transferred to the Mpumalanga Organised Crime Unit in Nelspruit.

"No person has been arrested yet. We are also appealing to the community to assist the police in tracing down these cold-blooded killers," said Hlathi.

This is not an isolated occurrence. The ANC needs to be more vocal about this kind of thing! Remember Peter Mokaba - "Kill the Boer?" The chickens are coming home to roost!

OK so let me sum up the tone of the article: One - tourism could be affected, Two the world cup matches could be threatened and three it was a bungled robbery. Where is the outrage of the fact that a defenceless couple where murdered. We live in a sick society where we allways find the reason for the murder which dilutes the horrific fact. Bring back the death penalty...

this seems to be a daily occurance in SA the police should leave no stone unturned with all such senseless murders and other crimes. Yes SA is viewed by the outside world as being one of the most violent countries in the world. How can one feel safe in such an environment? Law enforcement agencies dont have much time to rid the country of these criminals and murderers. 2010 is only 8months away.

Stop telling us what the problem is, we all know what it is, and start acting on it! Better law inforcement will be a start.

mortymoose 10/31/2009 5:54:18 AM
Yet! the powers that be, still choose to ignore this threat, we have said this would happen, only to be declared unpatriotic..... just wait for the tourists to stop dropping like flies next year, the world cup will not be a good platform to market our country, but will in fact have the opposite effect!

Basil Houghton 10/31/2009 6:35:45 AM
Please bring back the death sentence for serious crimes because we have already lost the war against crime and we need to fight fire with fire. An eye for an eye!!!

André 10/31/2009 7:04:31 AM
We should have declared a state of emergency long ago so we could utilise all forces to get rid of crime. Bring back the death penalty!!!!!!!!!!!!

DS 10/31/2009 7:18:50 AM
This is horrific but so is every one of the 20 000 murders SA experiences every year. Why now is it a big issue? Our leaders should have done something about this many years ago before it got out of control. Too little too late!!!!

DISGUSTING HORRIFIC

Don't let this worry you, Mathews Phosa has said, "We will launch a massive effort to enhance stability ahead of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, but at the same time finding the right mix of socio-economic measures that will combat poverty and unemployment, issues that are at the root of crime." If that doesn't create a stampede to get here, nothing will. btw Mathews is the ANC treasurer-general. Repeat - ANC treasurer-general. He is not in Government, per se, but has made commitments in it's name. When it fails to deliver, will take the rap?

It amazes me that the big story here is that this crime might effect 2010 figures! The uproar here should be that yet again, 2 innocent people have been murdered in South Africa - the murder capital of the world. Whilst the fat cat government sits back in their new BMW's and Merc's and allow it to happen. Yet another Government method to get rid of whites I suppose.

Thank you MEC for speaking out so strongly. We too feel a great sympathy for the loyal staff who now be jobless. This act has made Mpumalanga poorer.

JR 11/1/2009 6:40:02 PM
Time the world get to know!!!! Publish it on the front pages of the international newspapers!! The innocent die daily and nothing gets done.

My wife and I have stayed with Leon and Hetta twice on our holidays from England. They were a lovely couple and great ambassadors for your country. It was such a senseless crime and such a waste of two lives. I just hope that the killers are caught. We were going to visit South Africa again but this has made us think twice.

CS 11/6/2009 11:58:35 AM
We have stayed with Leon and Hetta last year - two lovely people. This is so horrific, I don't have words. When, when when is our government going to start doing something about crime in this country!

Marietjie 11/17/2009 3:39:37 PM
My son was shot in an armed robbery last month. The shooter was positively identified by 3 eye witnesses, he was arrested and went free two days later. He is still a free man...
