Johannesburg - An illegal drag-racing event ended in a shooting that left a teenager dead and seven other people injured in Duduza on the East Rand, said police on Monday.
Captain Jethro Mtshali said several shots were apparently fired to disperse a group of people who were racing cars in a street in Duduza on Sunday afternoon.
But, he could not say if the SA Police Service or Ekurhuleni metro police had fired the shots.
"We are still investigating the matter, but information is that metro police officers were first to arrive."
He said the crowd had started pelting police with stones, when the shooting took place.
Wounded by a stone
"The SAPS was called only to calm the situation, but I can't say who fired the shots."
Superintendent Vusi Mabanga of Ekurhuleni metro police said they had gone only to inspect an accident.
"Our officers were not involved in the shooting, but one of them was wounded when the crowd threw stones at them."
