Durban - A 38-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly issuing false receipts to people paying fines at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court, police said on Tuesday.
Inspector Joey Jeevan said police investigations had revealed there were so far 178 cases of fraud, for an amount of about R180 000, against the justice department employee.
She would allegedly issue the same receipt for payments for deferred fines and admission of guilt fines.
Those who had received their receipts would not be aware that another person had the same receipt. The woman would then pocket the money.
She has been taken into custody and is expected to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate's Court.
Jeevan said more arrests were expected shortly.
