Mafikeng - Students at the University of North West, concerned about the merger of higher education institutions, barricaded the entrance for a second day on Thursday, university spokesperson Sam Matabogi said.
He said the students were unhappy that the student representative council (SRC) did not consult them when they made suggestions on a draft statue that would ultimately govern the merged University of North West, Potchefstroom University and the Sebokeng campus of Vista University.
The new institution will be called North West University.
Matabogi said the university had a meeting with the students on Wednesday. It was agreed that students would not barricade the entrance again and their concerns would be addressed.
University management was trying to ascertain why the entrance had been barricaded again.
"They complained that the input from the SRC contained in the draft does not address the interests of the students.
"The university agreed to withdraw the input and allow them to make new input," he said.
Matabogi said other universities were also working on their documents which will be presented to the education minister, Kader Asmal.
