Left-hand drive vehicles OK - AA

2008-12-05 12:37

Johannesburg - Left-hand drive vehicles are not in danger of being banned, said the Automobile Association on Thursday.

It was responding to reports in the Sunday Times and the Sunday Independent in November, which said left-hand drive vehicles could not be registered under new regulations.

AA spokesperson Rob Handfield-Jones said he believed the misunderstanding stemmed from a misreading of amendments to current regulations.

"If you read the amendment in isolation then you might have thought left-hand vehicles were banned," he said.

The proposed amendments were published in the Government Gazette in November.

"We have consulted with Department of Transport legislators on this issue and the AA's opinion is that the amendment poses no threat to the ability of owners of LHD vehicles to use, sell or license their vehicles," said Handfield-Jones in a statement.

Re-registration?

But Department of Transport spokesperson Collen Msibi qualified this. He said that while the original owners could continue to legally drive their left-hand drive cars, once the cars changed hands they could not be re-registered.

Msibi said that at the moment, the cars could not be bequeathed but "there needs to be some sort of provision for people inheriting these cars."

Msibi called new regulations a "precautionary measure".

Among others, the new amendments changed the cut-off date for first registration from January 1, 2000 to July 23, 2004.

Of all of the problems that we have with traffic on our roads - e.g. the lawllessness of taxi drivers, the poor discipline amongst our truck drivers, the shocking conditions of some of our roads - surely about the least dangerous aspect of driving on our roads is the danger posed by left-hand-drive vehicles - and yet this is what our department of transport focuses their attention on. The mind boggles ......

too terry, you crack me up. imagine going to a non-commomwealth country where they drive on the other side of the road ie most of europe, america and asia for a while or whatever, buying a car, wanting to bring back it and being told "nope sorry can't register, your steering wheel is on the wrong" hahaha viva mzansi...

Let's face it, how do you overtake on the right with a left hand drive car, do you go into the ongoing lane before you can see past a truck ?

Derek 12/5/2008 1:13:59 PM
The answer is.... with caution. It's easy, you drop back a bit and when you you are able to see what's ahead, you pass if it's safe. As with anything, take your time.

You learn to drive a left handed car quite easily for most people that actually has one. So, when you want to pass, you pass... As for the government stuff. Let's be serious :-) When was the last time they had a look at what actually matters and compared it to what they're doing... They're just trying to make up for their lower IQs and making decisions that they don't quite understand themselves :-D We have to admit that we have the dumbest people in the country running it!!!

Danie, you right, its kind of not easy to overtake with a left hand drike, more especislly if you foloowing a truck, ask me, have driven one before.

Sam 12/5/2008 1:43:28 PM
Well well well, it seems like the dept of transport have messed up....didnt they think of the fire engine trucks that are left hand???will they be getting right hand drives now :-)

U guys are rediculously funny... I live in the UAE ahve been for about 2 months now...and when I arrived here I was shocked to find that the taxi drivers actually drive on the wrong side of the road and they're are far worse than the Zulu taxi drivers from NOORD taxi rank. Eventually I got me some wheels and when I over take I do it like a true colored from Lens... Drop my seat really low, spin my wheels and when someome hoots @ me... I scream at the top of my voice " VOETSEK JOU MA SE VROT KOEK.
