Miners release last hostages
2009-07-10 18:24
Brits - Shortly before 18:00 police managed to convince striking mineworkers to release the last four supervisors being held hostage underground at a North West mine.
"Because of the unions' and mineworkers' claims that no hostages were held, the police took statements from the hostages in which they state they were held against their will," said police spokesperson Superintendent Lesego Metsi.
The workers were still refusing to leave the Crocodile River Mine near Brits.
Members of the unions had left the mine premises, but a large police contingent was still on the scene.
