Johannesburg - You can stuff a chicken with lemon, herbs, garlic and bread crumbs... And now, it appears, you can even stuff it with gold.
An employee of Browns - The Diamond Store realised this unusual recipe had failed on Monday, when he tried to smuggle gold out of the business's workshop in Dunkeld, Johannesburg - inside a cooked chicken.
He was caught while going through a security check-point along with the very expensive meal, according to Browns. It is unclear how much gold had been in the chicken.
The man was arrested at approximately 09:00, said Bongi Mdletshe, spokesperson for the Rosebank police station.
The man appeared in the Hillbrow Magistrate's court on Tuesday, charged with attempted theft and the possession of suspected stolen goods.
He was refused bail, and will appear in court again on December 8.
Still searching for buyers
Mdletshe would not identify the man, because the police are apparently still searching for the people to whom he would allegedly have sold the gold.
Browns' security officials also searched the man's house.
The company recently heightened their security measures and upgraded their metal detectors, said managing director, Belinda Phillips.
"Employees were informed about these measures beforehand, and were asked to refrain from wearing any metal due to the extreme sensitivity of the new metal detectors."
Upon enquiry, Browns preferred not to comment further about the matter.
