Johannesburg - The Councils of the Rand Afrikaans University and the Technikon Witwatersrand have jointly proposed a new name for the combined tertiary institution which comes into being in January 2005.
The name "University of Johannesburg" has been proposed, a spokesperson for the RAU and Technikon said in a statement on Tuesday night.
The new university would be established once the East Rand and Soweto campuses of the Vista University have been incorporated into RAU, and the institution has merged with the Wits Technikon.
The proposed new name was submitted to the Minister of Education last Friday, in response to a request by the ministry.
"It is the two Council's belief that this name not only reflects the new university's geographical locality, but also the vibrant spirit and economical, industrial and business acumen associated with it..." the joint statement read.
Both RAU and the Technikon nominated four representatives to the interim council and a request was made to the minister to appoint a chairperson.
