Johannesburg - A young American missionary has fallen 25m to his death while attempting to climb Cathedral Peak in the Drakensberg, Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife (EKZNW) said on Tuesday.
"Jason Fry, 19, fell to his death while climbing on the eastern face of Baboon Rock," spokesperson Jeff Gaisford said.
Fry and two friends were attempting to reach the summit of Cathedral Peak in the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park around 13:00 on Monday when he slipped and fell.
Gaisford said one of Fry's friends managed to get to him and attempted cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for over an hour and a half.
A friend ran to Cathedral Peak Hotel for help, which in turn contacted EKZNW.
Paramedics were airlifted to the scene by a helicopter, but found that Fry had probably died in the fall.
"Fry's body was recovered by members of the Mountain Rescue Group," said Gaisford.
The hiking party were part of a Christian missionary group working in the Ladysmith area.
