Firm cracks glass-dildo market

Johannesburg - A glass factory near Johannesburg has received an order for hundreds of glass dildos - in various sizes.

"This is a first, but we always go out of our way to ensure 100% client satisfaction," said Jes Prette-John, the owner of Ngwenya Glass Works in Muldersdrift.

According to Prette-John, a South African company placed the order, which is to be shipped overseas. But, the sex-toys will also be tested on the South Africa market, he said.

He said glass dildos made in South Africa were a lot cheaper than those on the American market. They retail for about US$150 (about R950).

Prette-John said each dildo was unique, as there was no standard size. Most of them were solid glass, but there were also blown-glass ones.

"Our glass-blowers try to make each one as original as possible."

He said that although the order was the first of its kind, they had had other unusual requests in the past. He said that recently a woman had asked them to make a glass replica of her pelvis.

Prette-John said they handled such orders "with discretion and we don't ask too many questions".
