Johannesburg - Three people died and one was critically injured when a car and a police van collided outside Mthatha on Tuesday morning, Eastern Cape traffic officials said.
A police officer was among those killed, spokesperson Tshepo Machaea said.
"The injured man was taken to the Nelson Mandela Academic hospital in Mthatha shortly after the accident at 03:00."
He said the accident between the van and Toyota Corolla happened on the R61 between Mthatha and Libode.
The cause of the accident was unknown, but Machaea said alcohol and speeding was not ruled out.
"There was liquor in the Corolla and the extent of the accident suggests one of the cars was speeding."
