Cape Town - An unidentified gunman shot and killed a police officer in Tamboerskloof on Tuesday, Cape Town police said.
Captain Randall Stoffels said Inspector Lukas Marthinus Nell, 35, was shot in the chest and leg after he and his partner spotted a suspicious-looking man near the corner of Upper Buitengracht and Burnside Road, Tamboerskloof, at about 03:45.
The man was chased down New Church Street and Nell managed to apprehend the suspect.
As they tried to search the black bag he was carrying, the man produced a firearm and opened fire, hitting Nell in the chest. Nell managed to return fire before collapsing on the road. He was taken to a nearby city hospital where he died of his wounds.
The killer fled the scene on foot. A massive manhunt was underway to catch the suspect.
The other officer was unharmed.
