Durban - Friends and family members of learner driver Lizannne Janse van Rensburg were totally shocked when she was caught speeding on the freeway at 223km/h.
"Actually, it was all just a big mistake," is how Janse van Rensburg described the incident last Thursday, when she was trapped doing 223km/h on the N2 near Scottburgh in KwaZulu-Natal.
The 20-year-old Durbanite says she didn't realise she was exceeding the 120km/h speed limit.
"I don't even like speeding, and I usually stick to the speed limit. I was busy searching for my dad."
Janse van Rensburg said her father "just disappeared" from their home on Thursday and she thought he had gone to the airport.
She and her stepmother then took the family's red BMW to go and search for him.
Her father returned home unaware of the search and was shocked to hear about the incident. "He's over it now," she said on Tuesday.
Other family members and friends were also aghast. "Some of them wanted to take a plank and spank me," she laughed.
Janse van Rensburg was fined R30 000 for speeding, of which R15 000 has been suspended for five years.
She got her learner's licence in 2005 but was unable to get an appointment for a driver's licence test. She left that year to work as a waitress in London for a year.
She returned in December last year but has still not managed to secure an appointment.
