Duran - Two Durban policemen were stabbed during a jailbreak on Thursday night, police said on Friday.
Inspector Michael Read said police had launched a manhunt for the two men, who escaped from the Cato Manor holding cells after attacking the two policemen.
Mcviseni Mthethwa, 25, was arrested for murder and Mhlakanipho Makhoba, 20, was being held for house robbery. Both were awaiting trial.
"When an inspector went to unlock the inner gate, he was stabbed," said Read.
A constable who attempted to assist the inspector was also stabbed.
The prisoners fled on foot and police have since begun searching the area for the men.
Police say both men are believed to be armed and dangerous. It is unclear how the prisoners obtained the knives.
The wounded police officers are recovering in hospital.
