Johannesburg - African National Congress president Jacob Zuma on Saturday called on the public to work with police to eradicate crime.
As the chancellor of the University of Zululand, Zuma was addressing graduates and guests at the university's graduation ceremony.
"We cannot encourage vigilantism or anarchy. We urge citizens to work with the police to eradicate crime.
"Law graduates will help us in making the law an effective tool to protect our citizens, as outlined in the Constitution," Zuma said.
He also stressed that South Africa needs a sustainable agricultural sector to ensure food security in the country.
"Government and other stakeholders are in a process of restructuring and de-racialising the agricultural sector. This will ensure participation by the previously excluded majority," he said.
Speaking on the shortage of science and technology graduates, Zuma said it was crucial to invest in the development of mathematics and science.
"Mathematics should be made compulsory from primary schools until Grade 10 or even matric," Zuma said.
He called on parents encourage their children to learn mathematics so they can be less fearful of the subject.
