Durban - A policeman is being charged with corruption after he allegedly took R500 from the suspected rapist of an eight-year-old girl.
Police are now investigating other instances of alleged corruption by Inspector Kistasamy Pillay, 44, from the unit for family violence, child protection and sexual offences in Kokstad, after case files and documents from other cases were allegedly found at his home.
Pillay and his wife Lalitha Ramdew, 38, appeared in Kokstad Magistrate's Court on Monday, said police spokesperson Superintendent Zandra Wiid.
The two were arrested on Friday after local detectives searched their home.
Firearm, ammunition
An unlicensed pistol, revolver, air rifle and R5 ammunition were found in the house. Ramdew is facing charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The alleged corruption came to light after a woman laid a charge on July 8, saying her eight-year-old daughter had been raped.
Pillay allegedly took the woman and child to see a doctor at a clinic, but never to the district surgeon. A case was never opened.
Members of the Kokstad detective branch began investigating the handling of the case when the mother later complained to police about the lack of progress.
