Durban - A car passenger has been arrested in Pietermaritzburg for "playfully" shooting a motorist, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Monday.
Superintendent Henry Budhram said police on Sunday afternoon found a car with bloodstains that had smashed into a fence in Dambuza Road.
On further investigation, police discovered that the vehicle's driver Sibusiso Mahlaba had been shot in his car, before being taken to a hospital where he died.
Budhram said the victim had stopped on the road and was talking to occupants of another car, when one of them "playfully produced a firearm and whilst pointing it in the direction of Mahlaba, a shot went off".
His vehicle rolled and hit the fence on the roadside.
"All three occupants alighted and removed Mahlaba from his vehicle and rushed him to hospital," said Budhram.
One of the occupants later returned to the scene and was arrested.
Police were looking for the remaining occupants of the car.
