Durban - Two men drowned at Port Edward on Friday as they tried to save one of the men's grandchildren, police said.
While details are sketchy as two how the two men got into difficulty, initial reports indicated that the two had dived into the sea in a bid to save the one man's three grandchildren who had encountered difficulty.
National Sea Rescue Institute spokesperson Craig Lambinon said three construction workers building the Port Edward NSRI base jumped into the sea to save the three children.
The workers also retrieved the two men, but efforts by life guards and Netcare 911 paramedics to resuscitate the two, aged 52 and 56, were unsuccessful.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the children were unharmed and needed no medical attention.
Superintendent Zandra Hechter said the names of the two men could not be released until their next of kin had been notified.
It is not believed that the two men were related or knew each other.
