Zuma denies anti-Mbeki feeling

2006-09-22 13:03

Donwald Pressly

Johannesburg - Former deputy president Jacob Zuma denied emphatically on Friday that he was being used as a pawn against President Thabo Mbeki.

He also denied that there was "an anti-Mbeki camp" working in the ANC and played down suggestions that the two leaders were personally at odds.

These questions followed roaring displays of solidarity with him during this weeks Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) congress this week.

Zuma said that there had been times when they hadn't spoken to each other for years - when they were in different places - but he expected to see the president on Monday, alluding to regular Monday meetings of the ruling ANC.

Interviewed by e-TV and 702 radio here on Friday, Zuma said he would stay in politics. "My stay in politics has helped to liberate South Africa. My staying in politics will help to ensure that South Africa continues to prosper".

Humbled, deeply grateful for support

He said that his remaining in politics would also foster unity - following a suggestion that he should stand down and exit politics because there was risk he would be a divisive element on the political road going forward.

Asked if he would be pursuing defamation actions against a variety of newspapers, he said this was a matter being considered by his lawyers.

He did say that it was inappropriate that the former prosecutions boss Bulelani Ngcuka had suggested that he was "not fit to be president" at a meeting of certain selected editors.

Zuma repeated that he believed there was a conspiracy against him, but would not say who was behind this conspiracy.

Thanking his supporters, he said he had been "humbled and deeply grateful for the support I have received from the masses throughout the country, which have been driven by their anger and dismay at the systematic violations of my rights."

Corruption charges against Zuma were dismissed by the Pietermaritzburg High Court earlier this week.

If Mr Mbeki, who prides himself in applying his mind on pertinent matters selected Jacob Zuma as his deputy in government, why is no one questioning his choice if they are so persuaded that Zuma is not fit to be President? It certainly brings into question the president's ability to make proper judgements on key issues. Bulelani Ncguka was not elected by anyone, so his opinion is irrelevant. I am not a Zuma fan but this is a travesty of justice. Seems like elimination by innuendo.

If he really loved the country and its people as much as he say he does. Then he would step back and not run for presedent at all. Cause he will cause investers tomove out of the country meaning even more poverty. Not to mention the new wondful example he has set for criminals that in SA you can do anything you like and become president. They wonder why we ina state of emrgency were crime is concern cause the one we call leaders and criminals is the same people.

zuma will be a disgrace to the government of south africa particularly with the hiv/aids issue. he cannot lead with that type of an example. how do you tell people to use a condom if u cant do it urself. justice system is shame in south africa. zuma step down matlhomola

The law states you are innocent till proven guilty not guilty till you prove your innocence. Surely he has shown indescration, but he is huma like all of us. Only in SA is it OK for whites to run over black kids with their cars - not once- but twice and get 4 years. Yengeni got a discount and got 4 years. Zuma never stole but the damage to his family is ernemous. He has paid enough, many descent because the judge acquit a black man? He sacrificed a lot for this country. Leave him alone please.

The question of who should be the next president of south africa should be decided by electorate. We should be allowed to vote for the individual as other do so we can decide who the best candidate for the job is. Lets get the constituency system installed in this country as per slabberts recommendation. The electorate will obviously decide this problem once and for all

Danzo 9/22/2006 5:19:51 PM
It pains me a lot when people go on about Zuma not using a condom, who do you tell Brix if you had a quickie without wearing one and with umakhwapheni nogal! Let people decide who should lead them.

We should learn to respect the decision of the court, not only when it suit some few individual. I was happy to see Jacob Zuma getting, the so called "fair justice". For his supporters, the celebration might be little too early. If NPA decide to re-open the case, we should not look at it political conspiracy. It happened in the case of Constable Rasuge, and ultimately, the state won, the case. Striking the case out of the roll, does not mean someone is not guilty or guilty. Masese Madigoe

The bold step Mbeki is compelled to do if he is a Defendent of democracy is to swallow his pride and have 2 Deputy Presidents. The is no other resolution to this matter if he is committed to da ANC Constitution.I am really concerned Blacks who are White inside but are black upon physical appearance. They are collaborating with whites such as the DA who were da beneficiaries of Apartheid to demonise this man whose Struggle credentials, said Justice Qedusizi H. Msimang "are immpeccable and legendary.

Jerome Zungu aka J.Z 9/23/2006 12:16:41 PM
Zuma does not need the support of the traitors and the evil colonialists from Europe and elsewhere to lead SA,but only needs the support of the ANC Structures and the masses which he has to lead SA.What must infilttrate in your petty minds is the fact that we are not ready to alienate and isolate our martyrs who successfully defeated the Apartheid regime which ruined our ancetors life and continue to ruin our loved ones. It's time that whites who are not dedicated to SA developments packed & go.
