Brett Kebble murdered

2005-09-28 06:19

Johannesburg - Controversial mining magnate and art patron Brett Kebble was shot dead around 09:00 on Tuesday on his way to a dinner engagement, his spokesperson David Barritt confirmed early on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Chris Wilken added that Kebble was shot in Atholl-Oaklands road, on the bridge crossing the M1 to Pretoria.

"We don't know if he was led into an ambush or if he was followed," he said.

Shortly after midnight Kebble's body was still inside the car on the road.

"Police are busy with a forensic investigation outside the vehicle," Wilken said. "We will be here for some time. We all know this is going to be a very sensitive case to investigate."

Wilken said Kebble was shot and killed in his luxury vehicle. It appeared that two shots had been fired at the car.

"It is difficult to say how many hit him. We can only remove his body once the investigation is complete."

He said the post-mortem would determine how many bullets had hit Kebble.

"The motive is unknown, but there has been nothing stolen as far as we can ascertain. We have opened a murder docket. The serious violent crime unit has taken over. They are investigating a murder case."

Barritt said earlier that several shots were fired at Kebble's car.

"Mr Kebble died on the scene," Barritt said. "Apparently he drove some way before he lost control of the vehicle."

Kebble's father, Roger, was contacted and told Sapa: "I am in Paris. I don't know what happened. I am getting phone calls from everyone. You can find out from other people. Leave me alone now for a while, please."

No further details were available.
