Cape Town - Convicted R2m tax evader and gang boss Colin Stanfield brought an application to the Cape High Court on Monday in which he sought early parole on medical grounds.
Stanfield, who is serving a six-year prison term, was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer in May this year. He has only served 16 months of his sentence.
The department of correctional services is opposing Stanfield's application.
A SABC radio report said Stanfield's senior counsel Jeremy Gauntlett submitted medical certificates from a specialist indicating that his health had deteriorated to such an extent that he was not capable of committing any crime.
Gauntlett said Stanfield had been receiving treatment at a private hospital in Wynberg since May this year.
The case continues.
