Durban - A Durban supermarket was looted on Thursday by 200 men, whom police believe were striking security guards.
Police spokesperson Gugu Sabela said the men entered the central Durban supermarket on Thursday afternoon in groups of thirty.
She said they were "suspected to be the striking security guards".
Once the men were in the store, a shot was fired and the men proceeded to loot.
"They took an unknown amount of cash from the tills, groceries as well as electrical appliances."
Damage was estimated to be R500 000. No one was injured and no arrests have been made.
KwaZulu-Natal regional general secretary for the SA Transport and Allied Workers Union (Satawu) Joseph Dube said he did not believe the men belonged to Satawu.
"We have been on strike for three months and we have asked our members to stay at home so they don't waste their money.
" It cannot be our members," Dube said.
