Johannesburg - A 31-year-old hiker from Cape Town has died in the Matroosberg mountains, near Ceres, SABC radio reported on Sunday.
He fell 150m down an inaccessible gorge, said Metro rescue's John Roos.
"They flew a rescue helicopter down into the ravine, but access is very difficult," he told the national broadcaster.
"They need to get to him with ropes and things like that," he said.
Roos said a team would be sent out on Monday morning to recover the hiker's body in what would be a "highly technical" operation in an area covered with snow and ice.
He said it would have been too dangerous to send the team in after dark on Sunday.
