Johannesburg - The bodies of two teenagers were found on top of a grave in the Azalea Cemetery in Imbali, Pietermaritzburg police said on Sunday.
Inspector Joey Jeevan said the girls - believed to be aged 16 and 17 - were found around 10:00 on Saturday.
They had been shot and stabbed several times in the head and body, she said.
It was believed that the bodies were found by cow-herds who informed the caretakers who in turn called the police.
One of the teenagers was dressed in blue jeans, a yellow T-shirt, blue Crocs shoes and a grey jacket.
She was of medium build and dark complexion, said Jeevan.
"It would appear that she was also hit at the back of the head with a blunt object," she said.
The other girl was of slender build and had a fair complexion.
She had braided hair and was dressed in blue jeans, a red and white long-sleeved jersey and sandals.
Police found two used 9mm cartridges and one live round.
Jeevan said the possibility that the girls had also been raped could not be excluded, but a post mortem would be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The motive for the murder was not known.
