Welkom - Northern Free State police have foiled an expected armed robbery on Friday by ambushing two alleged robbers.
Police spokesperson Captain Rosa Benade said five police officers staked out a shop at the Thabong taxi rank from 04:00 after being informed about a planned robbery.
Shortly before 08:00 they arrested two men, based on descriptions by the informant.
An unlicensed .22-gun and rounds of ammunition were confiscated.
The men were to be charged for the possession of an unlicenced firearm, Benade said.
Police have started questioning the two about possible links with murder and robbery cases.
The five officers were specially designated by area commissioner Lerato Molale to fight serious robberies, Benade said.
