Johannesburg - President Thabo Mbeki and Archbishop Desmond Tutu agreed to work together to build South Africa into a prosperous country, at a meeting on Wednesday night.
"The Archbishop had requested to meet President Mbeki some time ago, to reflect on some of the challenges facing the country over creating a better life for the people of South Africa and Africa," presidential spokesperson Bheki Khumalo said on Thursday.
Mbeki appreciated Tutu's request, said Khumalo, and the two agreed to work together towards creating a country capable of facing Africa's challenges.
Mbeki lashed out at Tutu last November after Tutu's criticism of the government's black economic empowerment policy.
He also chided the ANC for stifling debate.
